It Isn’t Just Trees You’re Wasting
Think of any time you may have run out of ink right in the middle of that 30-page report. You reach for the drawer to grab your next cartridge and to your dismay – they’re all gone. Don’t cry over spilt ink – grab your wallet and head to the closest distributor. You know this game all too well. This game is expensive, and it isn’t great for our planet. Those cartridges are expensive, wasteful, and harmful to the environment. They contain toxic ingredients such as volatile organic compounds in the form of solvents. Did you know that it takes almost a gallon of gasoline to create each ink cartridge?
When you throw away that report, it isn’t just the trees that you’re wasting. That ink and that ink cartridge contain resin and takes about 500 years to decompose in any wasteland.
So What Can You Do
There are a few ways that you can recycle your cartridges at locations such as Staples, Best Buy, or Wal-Mart. If you can’t get to any of these locations physically to drop your cartridges off, then you can mail them in! Go ahead and send them to HP headquarters.
You may also be able to refill your inkjet cartridge and then recycle it when it has reached the end of its life. Manufacturing plastic cartridges require 80% less energy than making new plastic.
Encouraging Your Co-Workers to Recycle
- Reduce or reuse
I know you have an old manual sitting around your desk. Rather than throwing it out, repurpose it and use the opposite side as a notepad!
- Invest in good bins and labeling
Studies show that individuals are more likely to recycle if the option to recycle is easily available to them. But out that yellow bin! It may stick out like a sore thumb, but the office needs a few reminders.
- Remove personal bins
Employees are less likely to waste if the option is less available to them. See what I did there?
- Run a recycling awareness day
Go ahead and get cheerful about recycling! Send out a memo reminding everyone to recycle his or her coffee cups and sandwich wrappers. Wear green to the office — spread cheer! Saving our planet is an exciting and positive venture.
As a printing company, we stress the importance of tangible documents and forms. Although this is a necessary part of our business, Enoch Office also supports the paperless movement, and discusses the topic further in one of our past blogs.
